High Voltage Test Equipment EDA III
There are many types of high voltage test equipment for verifying the performance of electrical devices with different targets and test techniques, designed accordingly to the specific requirements of test signals type and range for each device; one of the main applications of the high voltage test equipment is checking the insulation effectiveness that qualify the device to operate with reliability and safety during its lifecycle; this is the case of the EDA-III System, a high voltage test equipment specifically designed for the evaluation and diagnosis of the insulation condition in electrical rotary machines such as motors and generators.

The main function of the EDA system is analyzing the condition of the stator winding insulation in rotary machines (generators, alternators, LV and MV motors); the EDA is a high voltage test equipment that uses appropriate DC voltage levels with minimum risk for the machine, from 0 to 6000 Vdc.
The EDA III, (Electronic Dielectric Analyzer), is a unique equipment on the market, which unlike other high voltage test equipment for insulation testing (or hipot equipment), integrates many elements and measurements into a single system; this is a high voltage test equipment used by many utilities, workshops, manufacturers and testing companies, with an experience of more than 20 years on field.
The integration of diagnostic and trending analysis, and the high degree of test automation with intuitive and guided software, made this high voltage test equipment the ideal choice as first level test system in the predictive maintenance of motors and generators; compared to any other high voltage test equipment, the EDA provides a test with maximum information in minimum time, with a simplicity in the diagnostic that facilitates a quick decision to perform further test or maintenance in any of the machines tested, as the first high voltage test equipment to be used in the maintenance process during the scheduled shutdown; after the global evaluation of the insulation by the EDA test, the provided results could be completed in a second level testing by other kind of high voltage test equipment (tandelta, partial discharges, etc), to confirm the dielectric losses in the insulation.
The high voltage test equipment perform two test – with two different voltages – each one with two cycles, a charging cycle (or absorption cycle) of 30 minutes, and a discharge cycle with no voltage (or reabsorption cycle) of 2 minutes, during which the charge and reabsorption currents are measured, and several parameters are also calculated and displayed numerically and graphically, such as the insulation resistance graph.
The diagnostic through this high voltage test equipment is performed by correlation of more than 10 parameters, each one related to possible problems such as internal or superficial contamination, humidity, anomalous ageing, dielectric degradation, etc; for each test voltage, the EDA system gets the following main parameters:
- Insulation resistance (corrected in temperature)
- Polarization index
- Capacitance ratio
- Absorption ratio
- Time constant
- Reabsorption current
- Leakage current ratio
Converting a high voltage test equipment into a diagnostic system and decision-making tool
The EDA DiagHelp software allows relating all these parameters quickly, and then determining the issues in the machine’s condition. DiagHelp will analyze the results from any of the saved tests and will display the machine’s critical elements.
The EDA Trends software provides a graphical view of all the results in the database from successive tests performed in the same machine, establishing trends for each of the parameters considered.
In this way, the high voltage test equipment detects when a machine enters a risk zone and it is possible to schedule the most appropriate maintenance actions. A report including tracking graphics can be generated instantaneously.
