ROOTS relay testing software

Software for Automatic Relay Testing and Protection

ROOTS is EuroSMC’s answer to the growing complexity and diversity of relay testing methods emerging with the latest generation of numerical relays or IEDs. As an automatic relay testing software, ROOTS simplifies and streamlines the testing process for a wide range of protective functions..

Description

Making the Difficult Easy

Users can select the required functions to build a complete test protocol for various protection schemes—including but not limited to differential protection, overcurrent protection, overvoltage protection, distance protection—and perform end-to-end tests simply by clicking on a list.

Every IED is identified, described, and catalogued in a database along with the various relay testing procedures assigned and the results obtained throughout the relay’s lifecycle. Reporting can be made fully automatic, and test data can be exported to other information systems.

Extensive Relay Templates with Easy Updates

ROOTS comes equipped with templates of numerous relays currently used in various protection schemes worldwide, from the main manufacturers around the globe. This extensive library ensures quick setup and accurate testing, saving you time and reducing the potential for errors.

Seamless Integration of Relay Settings

In the templates section, relay settings can be easily updated via text files, as well as RIO and XRIO files. This feature allows for swift and accurate configuration updates, ensuring that your testing protocols are always aligned with the latest relay settings without manual data entry.

The innovative paradigm in ROOTS allows the protection engineer to calculate, view, and express the test parameters in terms of each protective function—such as differential protection, overcurrent protection, overvoltage protection, distance protection, and more (e.g., reactance, impedance, differential current, restraint voltage, negative sequence, etc.)—saving time and eliminating errors.

With ROOTS, the IED’s operational characteristics can be graphically defined from scratch, thanks to an easy and intuitive built-in graphical editor. This feature supports manual click-and-test methods, as well as computer-assisted test point generation for comprehensive relay testing and automatic report production.

The IED’s settings and trip logic equations can be directly read from the configuration files supplied by the main relay vendors, including text files, RIO, and XRIO formats. No interpretation mistakes, no waste of data transfer time, no typing errors. Values can be labeled to the user’s preferences or according to the relay manufacturer’s nomenclature.

ROOTS’ architecture includes a library of optional test modules—such as overcurrent protection, directional protection, distance protection, metering, synchronism/voltage, converters, and many others—that the user may choose to add at any time. Each module contains a test kit with test routines (reclosing, power encroachment, breaker failure, end-to-end tests, etc.) that can be used right off the box or quickly and easily customized to the user’s needs.

ROOTS has been designed and developed using state-of-the-art programming technology and EuroSMC’s outstanding experience in the field of electrical protection testing. This automatic relay testing software frees the user from the tedious task of assimilating the huge diversity of relay implementations, the different protective concepts by each individual IED manufacturer, and the need to be trained on diverse test equipment.

If you are in charge of the control and maintenance of complex protective schemes—including but not limited to differential protection, overcurrent protection, overvoltage protection, and distance protection—and cannot afford to lose your grip on the continuous evolution of relay testing technology, your natural choice is ROOTS by EuroSMC.
